Information literacy (IL) is the ability to articulate the need for relevant information; to identify and access appropriate information; to analyze information critically; to synthesize and apply new information effectively; and to communicate new knowledge, all in an ethical and legal manner. This wiki contains rubrics, assessment instruments, and ideas for incorporating IL into the curriculum.

Assessment
The Cabrini College Information Literacy Skills Inventory measures students' current information literacy quotient. The purpose of the inventory is to gauge students’ ability to identify, access, and evaluate information as well as their understanding of academic honesty issues.
The Searchpath Tutorial consists of six modules and covers topics such as using CAVALOG, citing sources, and identifying a scholarly periodical. Each module is followed by a quiz. Students can email quiz results to their professor.
For a more thorough assessment, students can complete the IL Skills Inventory, work through the online tutorial, Searchpath, and take the IL Skills Inventory a second time as a post-test. Instructors are notified of the student’s scores upon request.
IL Assignments
IL Skills can be learned through various assignments. Consider the following as alternatives to the traditional research paper and ask students to:

Write an annotated bibliography.

Compare and contrast the presentation of a topic in scholarly and popular periodicals.

Identify the print and electronic reference sources, databases, and scholarly journals in a particular discipline and an analysis of the contribution of each to the discipline.
- Choose (or assign) a scholar/researcher. Students explore that person's career and ideas by locating biographical information, preparing a bibliography of his writings, analyzing the reaction of the scholarly community to the researcher's work, and examining the scholarly network in which the scholar works.
- Compare and contrast primary and secondary sources on a topic; examining the source, content, and treatment of the topic.
IL Assignments Course Applications
The following assignments can help to introduce IL Skills into the curriculum.
Foreign Language
- Create a vocabulary test and administer the test to a sample of underclassmen and upperclassmen who have taken the foreign language. Compare results. Draw conclusions based on the results. Write a paragraph explaining the results in the foreign language.

Create a brochure, flyer, featuring organizations and businesses targeted for a foreign language speaking community. Students research the particular foreign language speaking community.

Create an annotated bibliography of information resources for a foreign language.

Investigate the value of learning a foreign language. Provide a bibliography of 5-7 resources. Write an abstract of findings in the foreign language.
Math
-
Give an oral presentation using the language of math to express mathematical ideas.

Create a written argument that demonstrates the development of a mathematical conjecture and creates a convincing proof of its validity.

Create a presentation that uses images to illustrate a mathematical concept, connection, or problem and its applicability to a real-world context. A bibliography is required.
- Use a variety of information sources to locate the calories in a ¼ burger, a large order of fries, and a medium shake as prepared by five different fast food restaurants, i.e., Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Burger King, Arby’s, etc. Demonstrate the total number of calories consumed at lunch if a person were to eat the same menu at a different fast food restaurant. Synthesize information from multiple sources and construct a graph to present results.
- Design a tutorial for using an electronic information source e.g. database, library catalog. A rational for the selection of the source and a bibliography is required.
Graphic Design/Studio Arts/Music

Survey first year students in studio arts classes about color, design, theories or techniques. Survey 4th year graphic design majors about color, design theories. Compare findings. Are 4th yr students employing what they learned? Investigate one of the questions: How does an artist value his work or what factors are involved in how an artist's work is valued.
- Do a content analysis of web sites, brochures, graphic design products--what design theories are they breaking, employing.
- Investigate what makes a web page visually appealing.
- Investigate how animation affects brain, visual function.
- Research how technology has changed people's music listening habits.
- After viewing a performance, write a review that includes at least one biographical source on the author/composer and one source discussing the historical context of the piece performed.
- Sample art students and students in other majors using an aesthetics scale-- aesthetic judgment ability, visual aesthetic sensibility--compare and contrast findings.
